This page is dedicated to modelling the aircraft of the Spanish Civil War using commercially available model kits. Kits are available for many of the aircraft mentioned on my site, and others can be converted from commercially available kits with various degrees of difficulty.
Below is a list of kits that have been or are available. This list is probably very incomplete, since short-run kits in particular are only available for, well, a short run. On the other hand, the same kits are often released by different manufacturers (eg. many of the old Frog moulds have been reissued under the names of several Russian manufacturers), or different manufacturers can be assigned to a kit depending on which part of the packaging one looks at. I am greatly indebted to Bill Brown and Nic Protonotarios for sending me lists of their large model kit collections. I have now also added the models mentioned by Miranda & Mercado. If a kit has (R) after the name of the manufacturer, it is a resin kit, if it has (V) it is a vacuum-formed kit. If it has no suffix, it is an injection moulded polystyrene kit. If you know of any kits to be added, please let me know. Those kits that I have myself are in coloured text, in case you want to write to me to find out anything more about them. Given the increase in interest in 1:144 and 1:32 kits recently, I have now listed these in separate columns.
Many of the kits listed below are no longer readily available, but some occasionally show up, for example on eBay auctions. For the currently available kits, the best source I know of is Hannants in England, which runs a wonderful web-based mail order system. Another site that I have only just discovered is the Aviation Megastore in the Netherlands, which carries kits from some of the more obscure manufacturers worldwide. Squadron in the USA also have a good range of kits available. Italian kits is a good source for Italian manufacturers and aircraft, and has a small on-line database of Italian aircraft and the kits and books available for each. A good source of kits from the Czech republic (where many of the best short-run and resin kits are produced), with excellent prices, is hobbyshop.cz, and MPM now run their own on-line model shop with excellent service for their own kits and several other manufacturers that are hard to find.
Of particular note are the resin kits produced by Dekno, a firm from Barcelona specialising in Spanish Civil War aircraft. Their early kits are rather crude, but later offerings are higher quality. Unfortunately this firm has now apparently stopped making kits (although several of the moulds seem to have been acquired and updated by FE resins). Recently Omega models have massively expanded their range of Spanish Civil War aircraft kits, and this trend seems likely to continue. Another newcomer on the scene is Steelworks models, run by Uwe Borchert, who has produced a kit of the single-seat version of the FK-51, which I hope will be the first of many - He also has several kits of Spanish Civil War AFVs available, and some very useful aircraft detailing accesories. MPM from the Czech Republic (which also includes Special Hobby and Azur) produce many excellent limited run injection moulded kits with resin and etched detail parts, and their expected releases, particularly in the Azur range, include some real gems (although most of those slated for 2009 failed to materialise). Pavla, Sword and AML are other Czech companies with smaller high quality ranges, often using the MPM moulds. Dujin from France produce a vast range of high quality resin kits of interwar aircraft, particularly French aircraft. ICM have produced some really nice kits of Russian and German Spanish Civil War subjects, and is now trading again. Aeroclub make many kits and conversions, particularly of British aircraft, and also have an on-line order service which also includes kits from Ardpol, Choroszy Modelbud, Broplan, AJP Maquettes and other companies not available through Hannants. Rest models is a Russian firm producing high quality resin kits in 1:48 scale - Their first aircraft offerings include a Polikarpov I-15, a Polikarpov R-5 and a very nice looking He 112 V5(V6). Kiwi resins from New Zealand produce some very nice resin kits, mostly with strong New Zealand connections, but also including the CASA Spanish Vildebeest. Also worth mentioning is BUM, a rather odd Spanish company that has re-released several other companies' kits with Spanish Civil War "stickers" (decals, presumably) - unfortunately not all of the aircraft so treated actually served in the Spanish Civil War, and several of those that did are presented in ficticious schemes.
I've not included decals or accessories in the list, but am thinking about doing so when I get time to revise the site (so would be grateful for any information that people can send me). A good source of all sort of aircraft decals is FlightDecs in Canada.
